Hoffman weaves her narrative together with several symbols — the color red, the white blackbird, the red pear tree, and the sweet peas, most of which make an appearance in each story. I started to dread the sight of that white blackbird.
And when a white blackbird appears or someone smells the wild sweet peas in the field, you know a loved one is going to get whacked as surely as you do when the camera looks up into the cold eyes of Tony Soprano. There is too much sadness and grief, and perhaps because the reader never gets the whole story in any one of the vignettes, it is easy to wonder what purpose there is in so much tragedy. I think I just wanted more from this book, as a reader, than it felt like it was willing to give.

Alnwick is in the heart of Northumberland, famous for its unspoilt beauty, and is one of the most picturesque areas of countryside in England - with long sandy beaches, quiet friendly villages, the Simonside and Cheviot hills, well preserved medieval Castles, and gardens.
Earlier, in one of the most poignant scenes in the book, Coral asks Isaac what a blackbird would say if it could talk. The child replies, "I'll never leave you, I'll be with you for all time. In The Witch of Truro a young woman named Ruth lives on a bluff that is called Blackbird Hill, but when her parents die of smallpox and her house and farm burn, she wanders the lands nearby wearing red shoes and singing to her six pet cows.
She is viewed as a witch until two women take her to Lysander Wynn, a blacksmith whose leg was bitten off by a giant halibut.

But in the succeeding piece, their happiness is shattered by Lysander's death from a fever, and the narrative shifts to their year-old daughter Garnet. She deals with her mother's terrible grief by unearthing red jewels that will take her baby sister to California.
In Insulting the Angels the color red continues with Larkin Howard , a young man who works in the cranberry bogs until one day he comes upon a woman burying her newborn child. In a desperate attempt to keep the child alive, he promises the woman to go fight in the Civil War as a replacement for someone rich.
That will give her and the child enough money to live on. In a nice twist, she dons men's clothing, becomes the battlefield replacement and leaves the nurturing man with the baby. There are many good men in this book, but the focus is definitely on strong women who are badly treated by life. Three stories follow Violet, a book-loving woman with a large red birthmark on the side of her face.
A handsome professor who comes to investigate sea monsters betrays her but leaves her with a baby when he dumps her for her pretty sister.
